K is for Kleptomania

Kleptomania = an irresistible urge to steal items of trivial value, people with this disorder are compelled to steal things, generally, but not limited to, objects of little or no significant value (pens, paperclips, paper, or tape)

Ah yes, but is Krista a kleptomaniac?  (She sees her readers clutching their novels to their chests and glancing around with shifty eyes.)

No, I'm not.

I'm actually a recovering kleptomaniac, though I guess it isn't anonymous anymore.  The meetings weren't that good anyway - all of the pens kept disappearing and one woman always had a purse full of crackers.  I don't get it.

But, what was my crime or passion for my kleptomania?  Shiny things.  (Readers start laughing hysterically)

I couldn't help it.  I was eleven and I was strongly compelled to have a collection of shiny things hidden in the cat's bed.  (Snowball didn't like sleeping in it anyway.)  I had a few pieces of tinsel left over from Christmas, paperclips, quarters, a tie pin, and even the cap at the end of my sister's flute.

Shiny... pretty... and shiny.
Yes, I took that.  But those days are over.

I promise you that I am no longer a kleptomaniac and your shiny items are safe. :D

Did you have anything that you "collected" or actually collected as a kid?

  1. When I was a child, I used to collect stickers and Garbage Pail Kids, but I was not a klepto. =)
I can see how a child would be drawn to shiny things- they reflect light and images and carry a suggestion of something magical. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I love shiny objects and things! I think I've got more into sparkly stuff as an adult. It's weird. Or maybe I just don't remember being a little girl who loved sparkles ;)

  4. I was never into collecting things. Not my personality, I guess.

And wow, I didn't know you were once klepto. I guess as a child, it's normal to have a certain fascination for things--like the way you did with shiny objects. :)

  5. The first thing I thought of when I read "kleptomaniac" was the old guy from TinTin who was stealing everybody's wallets and had like a wallet library at his place, haha.

The little cap thing on the end of my flute used to fall off all the time, it was just begging for 11 year old you to come pick it up!

  6. I liked to collect books. For Christmas, I'd always ask for a B&N gift cards and I'd buy books. Half the time I wouldn't even read them, which was a big waste of money. But I guess I've always had a love for it!

That's so weird that we both wrote about kleptomania today :)

  7. I did take anything, but I did buy comic books. Every new Super Man comic book cost 25 cents, and I bought it. I hid my collection from my brothers, who trashed everything they got their hands on. Unfortunately they found my comic books, which ended up in shreds out on the grass.

  8. I used to buy star wars trading cards, as well as Grease ones...despite what a geek that makes me, I really wish I still had them!
