IWSG - Will anyone read my book?

It's time for another installation of The Insecure Writer's Support Group, which posts on the first Wednesday of every month.  Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

There are so many books out there and I'm afraid whatever I write will get lost out there and no one will read it.  I've seen self-published books absolutely tank and the same with professionally-published books.  Whichever way I go, I want people to enjoy my books.

* I want my readers to be furious with Olivia for staying with her boyfriend abuser, as Ethan is beating her and threatening to kill her. (Down in the Creek)
* I want them to weep with Sophie as she sees the boy from the Missing Poster is before her and he's dying, tormented by the evil Everett.  (To Love Without Hope)
* I want them to gasp for air with Lydia as she beats her hands upon the trunk lid, desperate to get out and knowing if she doesn't, her unborn child will die with her.  (The Secret)
* I want them to plead with Edom to run as he clutches the newborn baby to his chest and fights to save the innocent while protecting his sister from an unjustified death.  (Nameless)
* I want them to feel the burn as the whip tears flesh from Princess Dalia's back as she is flogged for standing up to her father and demanding freedom for the innocent.  (Unless)
* I want them to feel the heat of the flames as Kaela sees innocent faeries and mermaids burned to death, and realizes she cannot save them.  (Defiance)

But, would anyone read them?  Do you ever feel like you are spending all this time writing and no one will ever read it?

In other news, NaNoWriMo is going so very well!  Here's my updated progress:

NaNoWriMo Word Count - "Defiance"
Day Four:  26,664
Day Five: 30,062
Day Six:  32,089

I better go get today's writing done! :)  How is NaNo going for you?

  1. I frequently have these worries myself. You're definitely not alone in that one. Just keep writing, and hopefully the readers will follow!

  2. "Defiance" sounds so interesting! Keep writing. Just keep witing, writing, writing...

Congrats on your word count for NaNo! Way to go!

  3. You make your stories sound so captivating in just one line! And YES, I totally have thoughts like this! I think every writer does from time to time. You sound like you're doing great, though!! Keep on keeping on!

  4. Wow! Great job of creating interest with just one line! Nicely done. :) And good work with Nano!

  5. No NaNo this year, but it looks like you're doing well.

I'm struggling with this issue now, especially having released my self-published novel last month. A few people have read and a few reviewed, but will others want to read it? I take some comfort in knowing it wasn't a waste of time since I have such a passion for writing :-)

  6. Same goes with me ....I love writing a book and as soon as I think of writing I have this worry inside me that someone will even read my book. But you shouldn't get worry you are a great writer and this post is greatly written :)

  7. Be encouraged. I write for the love of it, even though I am selling books. By the way, Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime.

  8. First of all - your NaNo progress is exceptional - congrats!!

And yes, I had the exact same fears about whether people would read my books before I published. There is so much competition, so many amazing stories to be read, it's easy to feel like yours will get lost amongst them all. However, if you work hard to get the word out, people will hear you and they WILL love your books! Don't be afraid, you can do it!

  9. I worry that IF they find them, they won't like them.

    Yours sound wonderful! :)

  10. Look at all of your successes so far! And man, you're rockin' the NaNo house! We can't worry about those things. Sure, it's normal to have those fears, but we as writers, must write the story we're meant to tell. We must write from our hearts, minds, and passions. Put enough of those three things in there, and someone, probably many, will LOVE it. :) Happy IWSG day!

  11. I have to say, I think I would read and enjoy every one of those books! They each look very interesting to me :)
I've tagged you in a meme on my blog :)

  12. You're not alone in your worries. Congrats on your word count for NaNo.

  13. I have read part of one of your books and I found the characters to be very relateable, and I totally wanted more. So I think you have nothing to worry about :)

  14. Congrats on your NaNoWriMo progress!

I write mostly for fun at this point, but whenever I start thinking about publication, that's always a worry--whether people will find anything I did publish.

  15. Woohoo! Look at that NaNo progress. I'm impressed.

  16. It's all in how well you connect as a writer and how well you connect as a person. Do those two things well, and you won't have to worry. Believe!

  17. new follower here! great post and very understandable...who knows if what you write goes to the bottom of the totempole. but, it's a risk you take. u might find a few that read it and it inspires them...

  18. You are doing excellently with NaNo! I just hit the halfway point today. I often feel the same way as you do. I want people to fall in love with my books. Yet I know even if no one ever read them, I'd keep writing.
