C is for Captain Jonathan Archer

Captain Jonathan Archer is my favorite Captain of Star Trek.  I know quite a few people disagree, claiming it was Picard or Kirk, though not many people say it is Janeway (but I really enjoyed her - the only female captain!).  He's got the hardest journey ahead of him.

"To boldly go where no man has gone before..."

Literally.  Captain Archer is the first starship captain, with his ship, Enterprise NX-01.  There's no federation to protect him or his crew.  They are alone.  (Except for the nosy Vulcans, but that is letter V.)  Archer and his crew meet new species, make quite a few mistakes, and have some interesting adventures.  I love the premise of this series and getting to see how they first reacted to their journey in space. This is the series I grew up with; my dad and I watched every episode together.

Jonathan Archer's father created the warp five drive, but he died before it was completed.  It is only right his only son is the first captain.  Jonathan struggles to find his footing at first and struggles to find a balance between being an explorer and what is morally right.  During the third season, we see a deep change in Archer's character as he hunts down the Xindi, who plan to destroy Earth and killed 7 million innocents.  He is alone in the Expanse and forced to make some poor choices.  One of my favorite lines is him talking about how he can't save humanity if he looses what makes him human.

This clip summarizes his changes in season 3.

"You've changed, Captain."
"And not at all for the better."

He recovers and tries to become the explorer again, but Captain Archer is never the same.  He becomes a legend and makes way for the Federation.  I love his journey.

Which captain from Star Trek is your favorite?

  1. I do love Archer! Then again, I've always been a fan of Scott Bakula, so that helps!

  2. So you wrote over 8k on day 1? That's incredible!

Sadly I didn't see any of this series. I grew up with Picard and have a soft spot for that whole crew (OK, not so much Wesley Crusher.)

    1. Lol, thanks Nick!

It's a good series... you could still watch it. ;) I like Picard too. Wesley Crusher is alright, but Pulaski is worse. I didn't like her character.

  3. For me, the debate is really over Kirk or Picard since I haven't really seen much of the rest of the Star Trek franchise. And between those two... mmm... I knew Kirk first, but I think I would go with Picard. And it's not just because he's a fellow Brit. ;)

    1. Lol, Picard is a great choice! I swear he never ages or at least so gracefully we can't even tell.

  4. All these Star Trek posts are making me nostalgic! I used to cuddle up on the couch with my dad when I was little and watch it after the Simpsons! I quite liked all the captains, they were all brilliant in their own ways! I can't wait for the new Star Trek film, Into Darkness. It looks solo good!x

  5. I used to watch Star Trek on channel 48 in the 70's. My sister and I were obsessed with Mr. Spock! Wasn't he a Captain once? I'd have to go with Spock, since I Love Him.

    1. He was definitely a Captain! I forgot to include him, sorry! :)

  6. You know... I think he is the only one I never saw any episodes for. I like each of the others, each for their own reasons (and I'm a HUGE fan of Captain Janeway)

    1. I'm a HUGE fan of Janeway too - she would probably be my second favorite captain. I love her journey and how she's such a strong woman. :)

  7. I always liked Picard's more diplomatic approach (though the original series has a very special place in my heart). I haven't seen enough of Enterprise to have an opinion on Archer, sadly. (I've seen maybe one episode?)

However, a captain I was surprised I liked as much as I did? Benjamin Sisko! DS9 was a series I'd heard alternately good and bad things about, so I was really shocked when I watched it and ended up really, really enjoying it overall.

    1. That's okay - I could never get into the original series. It's so cheesy, so we are even. :)

I've actually never seen DS9 - my dad saw it and he enjoyed it!

  8. I have a friend who just loves Scott Bakula and I know she would love this post. I will have to forward it. I never saw this Star Trek but like Archer based on how you describe him. :)

    1. Aww - thanks Julie! That's cool! Archer is a pretty cool character. :) And Scott is a great actor!

  9. I liked Sisko too. I loved DS9 (except when they did the self-indulgent holosuite adventure ones), but found it was imposssible to see a second time around. I guess it was more soap than space opera. But Picard is one for any occasion...

    Happy A to Z-ing

    1. I'll have to see DS9 - I'm behind and haven't watched that one yet! Picard is pretty awesome too.

  10. I'm going to give another vote for Sisko, though I also liked Janeway (talk about a tough journey...whew) and Archer, as well.

I hated Picard, at first, but he grew on me as did the whole Next Gen crew.

I stopped watching Enterprise because it seemed that, each week, Archer and another crew member would get abducted. I did see the last episode, though, and thought it ended on a high note.

    1. 3 votes for Sisko! I really must watch this show now. :) Janeway definitely has the toughest journey and the longest journey - I love her character! She's a great balance of courage, determination and a bit of humor. :)

I liked Picard in the beginning, but I haven't finished watching the whole Next Gen series yet.

They did get abducted quite a bit, lol. It did end on a high note, I liked the last episode other than the fact they killed one of my favorite characters. :(

  12. Hmmmm...Kirk was the Captain when I was a kid watching with my mom and Pickard was the captain when I got roped into the series by a boyfriend...tough call!

  13. I've only seen TOS and a few seasons of TNG . . . but I would have to go with Captain Picard, if it came down to Kirk vs. Picard.

    1. Another vote for Picard - he is quite popular! I'd probably pick him over Kirk too.

  14. I never watched this series, but you've made it interesting enough that I'm considering looking it up. I was always more of a Next Generation-type...which, of course, is why Picard is my captain.
