"To boldly go where no man has gone before..."
Jonathan Archer's father created the warp five drive, but he died before it was completed. It is only right his only son is the first captain. Jonathan struggles to find his footing at first and struggles to find a balance between being an explorer and what is morally right. During the third season, we see a deep change in Archer's character as he hunts down the Xindi, who plan to destroy Earth and killed 7 million innocents. He is alone in the Expanse and forced to make some poor choices. One of my favorite lines is him talking about how he can't save humanity if he looses what makes him human.
This clip summarizes his changes in season 3.
"You've changed, Captain."
"And not at all for the better."
He recovers and tries to become the explorer again, but Captain Archer is never the same. He becomes a legend and makes way for the Federation. I love his journey.
