D is for Doctor, Not the Who

Sorry, but even though I'm a big nerd - I can't get into Doctor Who and it just doesn't interest me as much.

My favorite doctor from Star Trek is "The Doctor" from Star Trek: Voyager.  He literally has his beginning in the first episode.  Voyager's doctor is killed and the EMH (emergency medical hologram) is activated.  "Please state the nature of the medical emergency."  His first words.  The Doctor starts out with very little personality and not the most compassionate bedside manner.  As the series progress, he becomes one of the most brilliant and compassionate members of the crew.  He becomes his own person with hobbies, creates deep relationships with the crew, and is essentially real to them.

One of my favorite episodes is where the Doctor creates his own family.  It's not believable.  After B'Elanna Torres changes his program, he experiences what a real family is like.  A tragic accident happens and his daughter is dying.  He quits the program, not wanting to live through that.  Yet, he can't let it go and it's consuming his thoughts.  Tom Paris encourages him to let it play out, telling him he can't have family without the hard times.  The Doctor returns to mourn with his wife and son.  Seriously, the episode had me crying.

In the end the series, he finally chooses a name for himself, which he's been trying to do all along.  Joe. :)

Which is your favorite doctor from Star Trek?  If you had to choose a name for yourself, would you use your current name or change it?  I'd probably rename myself - Emma.  I've always loved that name!

Here are the tally results for my poll (ah, you didn't know I was counting) for Best Trek Captain

Captain Jonathan Archer: 3 votes
Captain Jean Luc Picard:  4 votes
Captain James T. Kick:  0 votes (Sorry, Kirk!)
Captain Benjamin Sisko:  3 votes
Captain Spock:  1 vote (Yes, he technically is a Captain)
Captain Kathryn Janeway:  2 votes
Neutral Zone:  2 people

The winner is Captain Jean Luc Picard!  Archer got second place, so I wasn't too far off with my favorite. :)  Thanks for "playing"!

Camp NaNoWriMo Update:                                (because I'm crazy and doing the A-Z and Nano!)
Title:
"Breathless"
Genre:
YA/NA Urban Fantasy
Goal:
30,000

Day Three:  9,435

A better writing day than day two!  I wrote 1,030 words.  I'm almost a third of the way through the book.  If I haven't got to your A-Z post for the letter C - I'm sorry!  It was a very busy Wednesday; Bible study, baking banana bread, and broken tires (had to pick up my dad late from work since he had a flat tire).  I will do my best to catch up to all of them tonight!  I didn't even get to the ISWG this month - sorry!

  1. I forget which of the Star Trek (before the new ones by J.J. Abrahms) movies it was...I want to say "Nemesis"...where Beverly Crusher is trying to make an escape through Sick Bay and she decides to activate the EMH as a 'distraction'. I was totally surprised when the Doctor appeared.

For me, that was the best part of the film :)

  2. I'm a fan of the Doctor from Voyager too. I like his dry wit, the way he explores new avenues, and even his bald head! That episode where he creates a family has me crying by the end too. Every single time I see it, no less.

"It took you 33 years to come up with Joe?" Classic!

    1. His dry wit was fantastic, even his bald head was great - I agree! I cry every time I see it too. :)

The friendship between Tom Paris and the Doctor was pretty great too. :)

  3. I liked Bones from the new films. I don't know why he just seems like a really easy going all-round good guy! If. I had to change my name I'd pick...actually I don't know. I was going to be called Hermione (yes, really) but it was in a baby names book and my parents didn't know how to say it!x

    1. I like Bones too! (Also, the actor Karl Urban plays Eomer in the Lord of the Rings) :) You were going to be called Hermoine - cool! :) I would have been Nathan if I wasn't a girl.

  4. Sorry, but there's only one sci-fi Doctor for me, and that's the one you can't get into! :( What is it about Doctor Who you struggle with? After 50 years, there's bound to be a Who story you'd connect with! I want to help you out here, Krista... :)

    1. Sorry! :) Maybe I haven't really given it enough of a chance. I would definitely be up to trying again (after the A-Z is over and NaNo). Lol, I'll try Colin!

  5. It's amazing how many Doctor Who posts I have run into today. This is refreshing, but I am not into Star Trek either. Well, at least I know now that there is another doctor out there.

  9. Oh, I'm so good with anything Star Trek. I'm a Trekker from way back. Nothing like a holographic doctor who, like Data, just wants to be a real boy.

  10. Oh, I can not wait for the movie! If only to watch Chris Pine and drool. Now, if we're talking about that Kirk, I'll vote for him ;)

    1. That's because Chris Pine is totally drool worthy! :)

  12. I never really followed Voyager, but when I did catch an episode here and there I liked the doctor too. Still, Doctor Who remains my favourite. I'm sorry you can't get into it, but it sounds like you've plenty of other shows you enjoy so it's all good :)

  13. I don't remember what her name is but the redhead doctor in The Nex Generation. She was pretty cool. Her son was sort of dorky though but he got better over the course of the show.

I'm a Doctor Who fan. What can I say? I love British and sci-fi stuff. David Tennant and Matt Smith are darn cute too. Sigh

  14. I love both Doctors with all of my geeky little heart. The Doctor was easily my favorite character on Voyager, and Doctor Who is one of my favorite TV shows.

As for my favorite doctor in Star Trek? That's really, really hard since I pretty much loved all of them. I think Bones and the Doctor might be tied for my favorite, with Julian Bashir coming in second place. I really enjoyed his character arc in DS9. :-)

  15. Oh, how I agree with you. I never was a Doctor Who fan, nor was I a fan of Star Trek, but my husband sure is.

    Enjoyed your post.
