Best/Worst Movie Remake Blogfest

I've taken a lovely two weeks off of blogging and writing/editing after completing the A-Z Blogfest and the April session of Camp NaNoWriMo.  But I'm back!  It's time for another awesome blogfest, hosted by Alex Cavanaugh, Stephen Tremp, Livia Peterson, and Al Diaz.

The Rules:

When Hollywood runs out of ideas, they remake older films. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it fails miserably. On May 17, list the best remake you’ve ever seen and the worst.

Let's start with the WORST remake *in my opinion*

WORST Movie Remake

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) - remake of Spider-Man (2002)

So many things wrong with this movie - the original was MUCH better!  Spider-Man suddenly became a hipster geek who is incredibly attractive and everything works in his favor.  Here's an honest trailer which sums up most of it...

Honestly, the movie was alright.  The original Spider-Man is wonderful, this one... not so much.  And during one of the biggest scenes (swinging between buildings and cranes), instead of focusing on the action, all I could think about was that the music sounded exactly the same as Titanic.  I looked it up when I got home.  James Horner.  Same guy did the soundtrack for both movies.  He might need to think of changing his compositions not to be so similar...  To sum up, Spider-Man is better.  Though while looking up the info for The Not-So Amazing one, I saw they are making a sequel in 2014.  Darn.

BEST Movie Remake

Star Trek (2009) - Star Trek (1979)

Though I love the original films and watched them with my dad when I was little, I love what they did with this new film!  Granted they have rewritten cannon to read a new timeline and new events for the characters, but I'm excited for the new adventures!  And a hopeful lack of Khan.  Never really liked Khan.  Anyway, I think this new remake has a lot of great things to come!  Here's a few thoughts on it - same guy, but a better honest review of the trailer. :)

One - Chris Pine is incredibly attractive.  Two - Still very attractive.  Three - I LOVE Star Trek!  Super excited for the new movie, which I will hopefully get to see tomorrow!  :)

Do you agree with my choices?  I'm off to read all the rest of the entries!  Hope I at least amused you!

My name is Krista and did you hear they are making another Jane Eyre?  I'm kidding, but seriously how many remakes of it do we need?  Have a great Friday!

  1. Super heroes and Star Trek seem to be popular choices. Not mine as I am not a fan of either. Love you Jane Eyre comment.

    Visiting from the blogfest.

  4. I agree with Star Trek, but I have to admit I really liked all the Spiderman versions. The newer one (from 2011? 2012?) was actually much closer to the comics than the Tobey Mcguire version... Of course nothing will be good as the comics but hey not too shabby. :) I can't wait for the sequel, and also Into Darkness (the Star Trek sequel)! Great post, Krista

  5. I was on the total flip side of The Amazing Spider Man from you. As much as I wanted to dislike it (I didn't feel a remake was needed), I couldn't. For me, it did a lot of things right and a lot of things the original should have touched on, as well.

I do, though, agree with you on Star Trek. That was a great remake :)

  6. I love Star Trek, both old and new. And I think it was smart to create an alternate history from the beginning. That gives them more room to explore the possibilities without worrying about existing cannon. There's more than enough room in my universe for all things Star Trek, so I hope new movies keep coming!

  8. I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man, but I definitely prefer the original. Tobey Maguire will always be Spider-Man to me!

I love the 1994 Little Women remake. I'm not so impressed with the Karate Kid remake. I'm sticking with Noriyuki Morita and Ralph Macchio in 1984!

Happy reading and writing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines

  9. Interesting so many people have mentioned the Star-Trek movies in their best category. I've not seen any of them, but I may need to try them out!

  10. I haven't seen these! If there is anything I've learned from this blogfest it's that I need to watch more movies!

  11. No comparison between the new Star Trek and the first film. Even for us die hard fans, it was not good. We should be grateful more movies were made.
I actually liked the Spiderman remake better than the Sam Raimi versions. The character is truer to the one in the comic book.
Thanks for participating in our blogfest!

  12. I don't think 10 years was enough time passed for a remake to begin with! :)

  13. Those honest trailers are really funny. I've got to see more of those. I agree with your choices. Thanks for participating! :D

  14. I didn't have a strong preference between the Spideys but I'm not into the new Star Treks. It doesn't make sense to me that they have all the original characters but now they're the same age and they all started out together.

Or maybe I just miss Jean Luc. (Oh Captain, my Captain...)

  15. Not a Toby Maguire fan, but I did like his (first) SPIDERMAN better than the recent reboot. Unfortunately, I can't expunge from my mind the horrific images of his dance routine in the 3rd one...

  16. I haven't seen the new Spiderman, but I'm excited to see it just so I can see how bad it is. :)

And I loved the new Star Trek. I watched the newest one last night, and I thought it was AMAZING. Chris Pine is soooo cute. Although, I haven't seen the original Star Trek, and I need to.

  17. Hmm ... I wasn't too bothered by the new Spider-Man, but the older one was good. I can agree with you on the Star Trek movie! Before the new movie came out, I would not watch any Star Trek. But that movie was pretty good! (And I hear the very latest movie (Into Darkness, I think?) is totally awesome!)

  18. Not really a Star Trek person - just never seemed to get around to it. ;) Love the Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies :)

  19. Yeah I think you made good choices. I think Spider-Man was better too.
