To continue the celebration of Tolkien Week, today I'd like to share my favorite Tolkien memory with you. I read "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy when I was in 8th grade, at age 13. It was a little deep reading for a preteen, but I fell in love with Tolkien and the world he created.
My childhood best friend, Molly, and I both love Tolkien. We even wrote some awful (no you can't read it) Lord of the Rings fanfiction together. Trust me, it's awful. We wrote an entire fanfiction called "Wait for Me". We were two elven princesses, who fall in love with Legolas and Gimli. Yes, I was the nice one. I knew Molly liked Legolas so I let her marry him. I married the dwarf. Yeah, meh.
My favorite memory was when Molly and I went to see Return of the King in theaters. It was the opening night, a cold December night in 2003. Our town theater received the movie late since they only had one screen. Molly and I went 30 minutes early because we wanted to get good seats. The theater lobby was empty. We were just early. Molly and I sat in the front row, waiting for the 7 pm showing to start.
But no one else came.
Molly and I saw the opening showing of Return of the King in an empty theater. It was wonderful! We both bought candy because we felt bad for the workers since they weren't making any money on just two guests. We laughed at the lines and squealed at the fangirl moments. Molly and I stayed through the entire credits. It was the best showing ever! We found out from a friend that the 10 pm showing was sold out that night, but no one came to the 7pm. To this day, we have no idea why no one came, but we saw the last Lord of the Rings as best friends and little book nerds. :)
