Happy Halloween everyone!

I'm going trick-or-treating with my little sister and brother, then going to snuggle up with my stuffed hippos and watch "Hocus Pocus". Have a great night! :) NaNoWriMo starts tomorrow, so don't party too hard and save some of that candy for writing motivation.

The Something Wicked Blogfest! Lock your doors - the villains are here!

It came, ha ha! (said in the voice of Sid Phillips from Toy Story, if you get that reference) Today is the day I've been looking forward to all month! It's the Something Wicked Blogfest, hosting by Krista and Krista! It's not too late to join! :)

Hosts: Krista McLaughlin
           Krista Wayment

When: October 29th, 2014

Who: You, of course, and the villain of your choice.

What: The "Something Wicked" Blogfest is in honor of Halloween and the release of Krista W.'s new book in her Trusted series. Krista and I are name twins, who ironically published books at the same time, both with a character named Lainey. Sometimes I wonder if I share part of her brain... We both thought it would be fun to share about villains!

The rules are very simple - you have 400 words or less to write about a real villain, one you created in a novel, or write a flash fiction. Your villain doesn't have to be necessarily a murderer or stalker, but any anti-hero in your writing will work just fine!

Today, I'm sharing my villain from my novel, "Silent Beauty." Matt Smith. He's a bully and the guy you definitely don't root for in my novel. I'm showing a scene between him and Jared, Alanna's love interest. Since "Silent Beauty" is written from Alanna's POV, we only hear about this scene. It was great to write from Matt's POV. So, without further chatter from me - my villain. :)

Character Inspiration, Matt

Matt leaned against the bathroom wall, watching as Jared washed his hands in the sink. Jared’s backpack slipped slightly as he reached for the paper towels, but he didn’t reach to adjust it. He could see the idiot was wearing another Trek Wars t-shirt or some dumb shit like that. Matt stared at Jared’s reflection in the mirror and noted he didn’t look up. Just like it should be. A wimpy freshman pulled the bathroom door open, but quickly backed up and didn’t come in. Matt’s lips curled up.

“I hear you’re taking the deaf girl to prom.”

Jared froze. “Yes.”

Matt took a quick two-step forward and put a hand on Jared’s neck, forcing his face inches from the mirror. “You know she won’t be able to hear the music. What’s the point in dancing with someone who can’t hear?” His hot breath steamed up the glass.

Jared opened his mouth to protest, but Matt slammed his hand on top of Jared’s and squeezed it as he forced it on the edge of the sink. In a swift move, he released Jared’s neck and turned him around. His fist connected with Jared’s cheek as he tried to duck. Matt grabbed his shoulders and tried again. He punched Jared’s lower lip and split it. Jared fell to the floor and hissed in pain.
Character Inspiration, Jared

“You’ll never win her over. She has more secrets than you’ll ever know.” Matt flexed his hand and shook it, sending drops of blood flying.

Jared sat up and touched his lip. His eyes narrowed as he looked up at Matt. “Alanna is perfect the way she is and someday, she won’t take your lies and intimidation anymore. You won’t win, Matt.”

“Oh, I think I will.”

The door to the bathroom swung open. The old, haggard Mr. Turnblat stood in the doorway with the freshman wimp cowering behind him.

“Mr. Smith, report to the principal’s office at once!” He trembled as he stepped into the bathroom and helped Jared stand up.

Even the teachers feared him. Matt went to the sink to wash the blood from his hands first. As the red liquid swirled down the drain, he grinned. An idea came to mind on how to mess-up the geek’s relationship. A kiss in fairytales promised love and affection, but the one he had in mind would destroy them.

I'm going to be sharing an extra scene I wrote from my novel, "Silent Beauty" and with my villain, Matt Smith and my MC's love interest, Jared Astin. Matt's more of a bully than a villain, but he's very intimidating. It won't be included in the actual book, but it was fun to write a little scene from him! Or well, it was evil to write... muahahahahaha!

Please join Krista and I in our fun Halloween themed fun and celebration of her new book coming out!

In other news, I started a new job on Sunday and until next Thursday (when my two weeks are up at the old job), I will be working 3 jobs. It is crazy busy, but I'm excited to work at the new job! Still retail, but there's no fitting rooms and I love the atmosphere. It's much more positive.

I'm volunteering at a children's Halloween party on Saturday and working 2 of my 3 jobs, so I'll be pretty busy! Have a great weekend and make sure to sign up for our blogfest!

I'm a NaNo Writer

There are fifteen days until NaNoWriMo, if you don't know, that is National Novel Writing Month. 30 days to write 50,000 words! It's a bit crazy, but totally worth it. I'm super excited about it! I'm a NaNo veteran. This will be my sixth NaNo. I've also done three Camp NaNo's. Out of the eight I've completed, only one time did I not finish a book and that was due to the loss of a close friend.

I'm excited to write another NaNo and create another novel! (Though I admit, last year's novel is still sitting in a folder and isn't edited. Oh well - I did write the whole thing.)

Here's a little sneak-peek of what I'll be working on!

Sweet Little Lies
Mock cover

YA Contemporary Romance

Ellie is a cheerleader and loves being popular. She gets decent grades and has a great football player boyfriend. She has plans, and hates when her plans get messed up. When a cheerleader on her squad gets injured, a new guy joins the team and Ellie doesn't know what to think of him.

Thackery dances and endures the teases from his classmates. He has a secret life, that he doesn't tell anyone. He reluctantly joins the cheerleading squad to help out a friend, but he doesn't plan on it. Despite her nature, Thackery sees something in Ellie that he wants to know more about it.

An incident brings them close and to be together, they'll have to stop telling lies and trust each other. To give up their secrets and love. "Sweet Little Lies" is a story about abuse, neglect, love, and loss of control in romance.

It's going to be super fun - so you really should sign-up if you've ever considered writing a novel, but never sat down to do it! Your first draft won't be perfect, but it will be written. You're also welcome to add me as a writing buddy and we can help motivate each other to finish! I'm kristam on the site, so check me out!

Are you going to be doing NaNoWriMo this year? Do you have a plot or are you a pantser? :) I'm a total pantser, but I do at least have an idea to start out.

Meet My Character Bloghop

The lovely, Sheena-kay Graham tagged me in the "Meet My Character" Bloghop and hinted that she wanted to meet one of the characters from my novel, Silent Beauty. :) Which, sounds like a wonderful idea! I've talked quite a bit about Alanna and her being deaf, here, if you are curious. But today, I'd like you to meet the other half of Silent Beauty, Alanna's love interest, Jared.

Character Inspiration, Darren Criss
1. What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historical person?

Jared Astin, and he's very fictional. (I didn't realize until revisions that I never gave him a last name, so I scrolled through my Twitter feed a picked a last name. Yep, he's named after Sean Astin.)

2. When and where is the story set?

The story is set in small-town, Brenton, Iowa, in modern times. There's no bowling alley and a single screen movie theater. It's definitely small-town.

3. What should we know about him/her?

Jared is a big geek. He loves Star Trek (all the shows and movies), along with running, and doing math problems. He's pretty smart. :) But, for being who he is, Jared is bullied and harassed by the other kids at school. He's a bit of an outcast.

4. What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?

I won't reveal all of Jared's secrets, but his parents divorced when he was a kid and his mom remarried a man who didn't treat Jared kindly. Jared lives with his dad, who... nope, that's part of his secret. ;) Jared just wants to survive high school and not get beat up every other day. Alanna tries to stand up for him once and he becomes smitten with the deaf girl, who wasn't afraid to try and protect him.

5. What is the personal goal of the character?

At first, it's just to graduate high school and go to college to become a math teacher. After meeting Alanna, Jared wants to get to know her, but she's very closed off to him. He becomes a friend, open to listening to her troubles and not judging her. He finds out her secrets and still wants to make her life better.

6. Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

The title is Silent Beauty. It was originally a novella, but it's now a full length novel. YA Contemporary Romance. There's no place to read it right now...

7. When can we expect the book to be published?

I just finished another round of revisions and sent it to my critique partners. After another round of revisions, I'm hoping to start querying agents with my new draft of the novel. :) I'm really hoping that this book will be the one!

I really wanna add a beach scene...

Now it's time to tag people! Feel free to ignore the tag if you want, but we'd love to hear about your characters!

Rena Olsen - I'd love to hear about any character your creative and hilarious mind created!

J.A. Bennett - You should definitely share about one of your amazing characters! :)

Cassie Mae - What new secret character are you working on, darling!

Thanks for reading about Jared and I hope he grabbed your interest! :) Thanks for tagging me, Sheena!

Finished Revisions, More Waiting

I finished the new draft of my novel, "Silent Beauty" last week! I spent a month, taking it from a novella into a novel with quite a few suggestions from my critique partners.

I'm very happy with how the new draft turned out! I added 18,787 words, five completely new chapters, extended other chapters, added a back story for my villain, added a new minor character, changed the ending, and added an intense scene to increase the tension. I didn't realize how much could be done to take my novella and add to it, until my critique partners gave me a glimpse at the potential. I originally wanted it published with a small publishing house, but the ones I wanted turned me down and two agents said they loved the premise, but it was too short. I wanted to make it longer, but had no idea how.

I started out with a document like this, marked up, and crazy full of suggestions.

It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I really appreciate everything my CPs said and did to help me out. I had a great time with some of the comments! Revisions became really fun.

Now, I'm waiting. I sent my new draft off to my two critique partners and I'm waiting to hear back if I made it any better and if I'm getting closer to finding the dream agent for me. I really hope Alanna and Jared's story of love and overcoming prejudices, can help me find a place in the publishing world. I'm hoping their story will be the one to give me a beginning.  :) Thanks to Rena and Jennie for saving my novel! :)

What are you working on right now? Do you have a critique partner? If you don't, I really recommend it! :)
