Just Me :)

One of my awesome writing friends, Rena Olsen posted today about who she is as a person and a writer. I thought it was wonderful and I wanted to do something similar.

I think it can be hard to get to know a person just through reading blogs about what books they've reviewed or just about what they are writing. I wanted to be a little more open with you today on who I am other than just a writer.

I work as an EA or educational assistant in a preschool room with kids from ages 3 to 5. As much as I love coloring pictures of flowers and snowmen, listening to Frozen music while dancing with scarves, and having fun conversations while stuffing snack in my mouth, it can be really challenging. We have a variety of kids from different backgrounds. Some don't have language skills and behavior issues. We have one who is almost deaf and another who doesn't speak English. It's challenging. I spend my mornings cleaning up after sticky fingers and scrubbing marker off the table. I love my job, but it can be exhausting.

And that's just one of my jobs. I also work part-time in retail, stocking lotions and sprays. The good thing is I always smell good. Not that I smell bad, but... anyway. :) I only work there a few hours due to cuts, but I enjoy it. I just wish it paid better. I can't even pay bills right now with my two part-time jobs. I'm job searching constantly while trying to sell some of the things I don't need on local swap-groups. It's a struggle and can be very stressful. I won't admit how many times I've cried over a bowl of cereal or macaroni and cheese. But I try to keep the faith that God will provide for me and things will get better. It's hard, but I have to keep positive and distract myself.

Writing wise - I haven't really written anything new in a month. I've done a lot of revisions on my novel, Silent Beauty, and even attempted to edit my book, Nothing Left to Lose, but I gave up on that one for now. I can honestly say that I've been working on two fanfictions and I'm not ashamed of that. I enjoy it and it's great writing practice developing plot and working with characters that already have a basis. I do get discouraged some days. I've finished eleven novels and have yet to find an agent, but that's okay. It's about the adventure, not just throwing the ring into Mordor. (Yes, I am that nerdy and am very obsessed with Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit.)

I haven't got everything figured out. And some days I don't like being an adult. I'm a twenty-six year old adult with no husband, kids, or even pets. I have days where I feel like a failure and don't understand how others seem to have it together. But I am happy and I love writing. Someday, things will work out. Someday I'll see my book in a store or at least get my little sister to beg for me to sign her book. :) I enjoy being fun on Twitter and helping my writing buddies! But I'm a normal person just like you.

Also, I'm on Day 25 of my 30 Days Hobbit Free and I've cheated several times. I don't have the self-control, but hanging out with my dwarf friends makes me feel better. :) You are welcome to follow me on Twitter, which is on the side of my blog! I share some great things about how Hobbit obsessed I am and you can see a little bit more of me. :)

IWSG - Which one....?

Today is another meeting of The Insecure Writer's Support Group, which posts on the first Wednesday of every month and is run by our Ninja Captain Alex Cavanaugh. This is a place where writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds. The awesome co-hosts today are Gwen Gardner, Dolorah, Sarah Foster, and M. Pax!

I'm a little stuck. Writing wise, I'm stuck. I don't want to call it writer's block, because I'm not a fan of the phrase, but I haven't written much this year. I'm struggling to find an idea to write and stick with it. In the past month, I've started three novels and each one has about three pages, then I stop writing it. I just can't decide which one I want to write! I've been working on revisions for a novel at the same time, so I think I have "revision brain" and I can't stop trying to revise what I'm writing. I just need to pick a project and write!

Here's a little snippet of the three ideas I have on my writing table:
Best Friends for Never (YA Contemporary) - Lexi and Tristan have been best friends since they were three and bossing each other around ever since. High school came and a scandal with Lexi causes Tristan to walk away from her. She can only look at him and feel the pain of her best friend not defending her when everyone called her a slut for no reason. He's the reason they called her that, but he suddenly won't come protect her. Something changed and she can't figure out what it is.

Secret Project (YA Fantasy) - Poppy and Malik, brother and sister, both were born with magic and being hunted. The King seeks to put them in his menagerie, especially since Poppy is the only one to be missing her gem, which helps focus and control her power. Her magic is uncontrollable and she doesn't mean to, but she kills. They are searching for the gem, but along the way meet a girl named Nina, who might have the answers they want.

Forbidden Attraction (YA Contemporary) - She knew it wasn't right to be attracted to a guy. Girls dated girls and boys dated boys. That's how it always was. But Bristol can't stop staring at Lucas. After an accidental kiss, she can stop thinking about him. Every part of her is screaming that she shouldn't like him, but she wants Lucas. It's a reverse coming out book, from the point of view that everyone only dates the same sex.

I can't decide which one to write! I'm leaning a little more toward the contemporary ones, but I'm still stuck. Hopefully, I can find some inspiration and get out of my rut! Do you ever have trouble picking a book to write?

February Goals

January was a rough start to 2015. I had quite a few things go wrong and it was an overwhelming month, but I'm glad it's over. Some good things happened too and I hope that things continue in the same direction! I don't want to share anything yet, but I hope that I'm making progress. :) I didn't do much writing last month, other than some fun fanfic writing, but that's okay. I started two novels, but didn't make it past the second page of either. I did work on more revisions for "Silent Beauty" last month and rewrote my query, so that's definite good progress!

It's time for an update in goals! I write new goals every month to keep accountable and to see the progress I've made. :)

Here are my goals from January:
* Query 5 agents with "Silent Beauty"
I ended up querying six agents and entering my novel into two contests! I made it into "Sun vs. Snow", which closed in 6 minutes, and "Agent Match" which takes place this month.

* Complete first round of revisions for "Nothing Left to Lose"

* Finishing writing Fanfiction story, "The Nature of Evil"

I finished two out of three goals! Not bad for having such a rough month. I did start my revisions on "Nothing Left To Lose", but I didn't get very far. I'm reworking a huge part of the plot and I'm not sure I like how it's going. I'm going to set it aside for a while and then try again. I did do some reading last month! :)

The DUFF by Kody Keplinger
Fraction of Stone (Fraction, #1) by Kelley Lynn
Mistletoe and Memories by Matilda Maxwell
How to Hook a Bookworm (How to, #3) by Cassie Mae

I also read two manuscripts from my writing friends. Wow, I have some talented friends! I'm very excited about both stories and I know they will end up published someday. :)

Goals for February:
* Celebrate "I love you... I know" Day with my best friend
Instead of moping around about Valentine's day this year, my best friend and I are going to watch the original Star Wars movies and eat chocolate as we drool over young Harrison Ford - super excited!

* Read "Woven" by David Powers King and Michael Jensen

* Pick next writing project and start writing!

Hopefully these goals go well! Also, I'm on day 10 of 30 days Hobbit free, so if you see me anywhere trying to watch "The Hobbit" or read the book or pinning things on Pinterest, please stop me. :) I love it so much, but we needed a little break. :) What are your goals for this month?
